Vault Hunters is an RPG modpack built around The Vault, a procedurally generated dungeon. Players level up, learn talents and abilities, and work towards collecting 25 artifacts to unlock a final boss. This guide installs the Third Edition on your server from the Modpacks tab and shows how players join.
Checked against Vault Hunters Third Edition 3.21.7 (Minecraft 1.18.2, Forge), October 2026.
What it needs
- A server with enough RAM. The pack's page tells players to allocate 8 GB (8192 MB), and we recommend 8 GB for this pack too, with 6 GB as the minimum. Check the plans on Minecraft hosting and choose one with at least 8 GB.
- The CurseForge source. The pack is published on CurseForge as Vault Hunters Third Edition for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. The Modpacks tab can search CurseForge, and the pack has a dedicated server pack, so the panel installs it as a ready-made server.
- Java 17. The panel picks Java for 1.18.2 itself, and you do not choose it.
- The pack on every player's computer. It is a Forge modpack, so players install Vault Hunters in the CurseForge app. That is how the pack's own page tells players to start.
Install it on your server
Installing a modpack reinstalls the whole server, so do this on a new server or one you can wipe. The panel's own note says it reinstalls your entire server with the pack, and you confirm first.
- Open the Backups tab and click Create backup.
- Open the Modpacks tab and choose the CurseForge chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab.
- Search for
Vault Huntersand find Vault Hunters Third Edition. The pack's page also mentions a skyblock variant called Sky Vaults, which this guide does not cover. - Click Install on the row. A window titled Install Vault Hunters Third Edition? opens.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if it appears, and tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to boot straight away.
- Press and hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then watch the Console tab until the install finishes. Allow some time for it.
The install sets up Forge for 1.18.2 itself, using the build the pack's manifest.json pins, 40.3.11. If you did not tick the start option, open the Console tab and click Start. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. On the 8 GB Netherite plan the first start took about 73 seconds, so give it a minute or two.
Join the server
- In the CurseForge app, find Vault Hunters Third Edition and install it. The pack's page says to set the app's Allocated Memory to 8192 MB in its Minecraft settings.
- Pick version 3.21.7. It is the file the server installs and the newest one at the time of writing.
- Start the pack and add your server in the multiplayer list with the address shown in the panel's left rail. Connect to your server for the first time shows where.
Make yourself an operator with Operators in the Players tab (Whitelist players and set operators) if you want to use commands.
Updating later
When the author publishes a newer file for your server's Minecraft version, the pack's card on the Modpacks tab shows Update to with that version. It only offers a file newer than the one installed, on the same Minecraft version and loader. Press it: the window that opens has that file already picked in its version dropdown, Keep my world, settings and player lists ticked, and holding Update and reinstall installs the new version. Leave Take a backup first ticked. With nothing newer out, the card reads Up to date.
A pack installed before the panel update of 27 October 2026 with Newest that fits your server shows neither, because the panel did not record which file it took. To update one of those, take a backup, press Remove modpack, then install the new version. Remove keeps your world and player lists, but the new install replaces them unless you tick Keep my world, settings and player lists in its window.
Each Remove modpack and each install with Take a backup first ticked makes a backup named "Pre-switch backup" and protects it. Only the newest of those stays protected: taking the next one lifts the protection from the earlier ones, which stay until a later backup replaces them or you delete them. A backup you protected yourself keeps its protection, and an install backup protected before 27 October 2026 keeps it until it is a week old. If every slot still holds a protected backup, the install changes nothing: its window stays open with The backup didn't start, so nothing was changed and the reason. Delete an old backup in Backups, or remove the protection from one, and try again, or untick Take a backup first. If the reason is the game panel's limit on backups in 10 minutes, wait as long as it says.
Common problems
- The server stops with an out-of-memory error. The pack needs the RAM above. Open Download Log in the Console tab and look for the error, then change plan from the Settings tab if you are short.
- The install ends with an error in the console. Where the updated installer is on, the Modpacks tab then shows The last install didn't finish: press Show install log to read what went wrong, then Retry install. Otherwise, read the last lines in the Console and install again. If the pack's download fails, the install stops before it changes any of your files.
- Players cannot join. Check that the server has finished starting, which is when the console prints a line containing
For help, type, and that you share the address from the left rail.
Installing a modpack replaces the server's current files. Take a backup first, and keep the copy if you may want your old world back.
