Isle of Berk and Dawn of Berk modpack Minecraft server

Set up an Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) or Dawn of Berk dragon modpack server on Minecraft: Forge versions, disk sizes and install tips for both.

Updated 7 min read

Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) is a How to Train Your Dragon pack by Kesselot for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. Its CurseForge page lists over 100 dragon species with more than 2k variants to tame, plus Viking ships, villages and dungeons. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's CurseForge server pack.

This guide also covers Dawn of Berk, a second Kesselot How to Train Your Dragon pack on Forge that installs the same way. Statements marked "both packs" apply to each, and the Dawn of Berk details are in their own section.

Checked against Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) 3.2.7 (the CurseForge files of 16 October 2026 UTC) on Forge 40.3.12 and Minecraft 1.18.2, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge 40.3.12. The server pack's variables.txt names both. The panel runs 1.18.2 on Java 17 and picks that for you.
  • Memory (both packs). Neither the Modrinth page nor the CurseForge page gives a RAM figure. The server pack holds 114 mod jars, so watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab after the first start. How much RAM a Minecraft server needs explains the sizing, and the Minecraft plans list each plan. The server pack's variables.txt sets -Xmx4G -Xms4G for its own start scripts, which the panel does not use. Dawn of Berk's variables.txt sets the same, and its jar count is in its section.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 292 MB and unpacks to about 326 MB. The download sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so you need room for both. Dawn of Berk's sizes are in its section.
  • The same version for players. Players need Claws of Berk 3.2.7 as well.

Install from CurseForge

The pack is listed on both Modrinth and CurseForge. Use CurseForge: a test install of another Forge pack from Modrinth on our panel on 23 October 2026 stopped with the error "forge provider not implemented", and nothing was installed. The same applies to Dawn of Berk.

Press the CurseForge chip and search for Claws of Berk. The filters belong to Modrinth, so they do not narrow this search. Press Install on the row titled Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) by Kesselot. Check the title and author, because the same search lists Claws and Skies (Isle of Berk), a different pack. A window titled "Install Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk)?" opens, and leaving Keep my world, settings and player lists unticked gives you the pack's own fresh world. The rest of the window (the version list, the backup and the EULA) is in Install a CurseForge modpack. The install log ends with Pack installed when it is done.

The CurseForge file the panel downloads is the dedicated server pack, so no mods are fetched one by one. This is the same for both packs. The pack ships no Forge files of its own, so the install reads variables.txt and sets Forge up itself. The log shows Installing Forge 1.18.2-40.3.12 (pinned by the pack's variables.txt). The install also turns off the pack's client-only mods, which run on players' computers (6 of them in this pack); the Mods tab can turn them back on.

First start

The ready line reads like Done (9.370s)! For help, type "help".

Open Config Editor to set Player slots for the group you expect. Its help text calls View distance (chunks) the biggest lever on RAM and CPU, so lower it first if the server struggles.

Common problems

Dawn of Berk

Dawn of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon pack by Kesselot for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its CurseForge page lists dragons to ride and tame, Viking gear and villages, and dungeons, with Terralith and Geophilic shaping the terrain. It is a separate pack from Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk), which is on Minecraft 1.18.2. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's CurseForge server pack.

Checked against Dawn of Berk 1.1.0 (the CurseForge files of 31 August 2026 UTC) on Forge 47.4.20 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.

What Dawn of Berk needs

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.20. The server pack's variables.txt names both. The panel runs 1.20.1 on Java 17 and picks that for you.
  • Memory. The server pack holds 69 mod jars, so watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab after the first start.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 119 MB and unpacks to about 142 MB. The download sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so you need room for both.
  • The same version for players. Players need Dawn of Berk 1.1.0 as well.

Install Dawn of Berk

Use CurseForge here too: a test install of Dawn of Berk from Modrinth on our panel on 23 October 2026 stopped with the error "forge provider not implemented", and nothing was installed.

Press the CurseForge chip and search for Dawn of Berk. The filters belong to Modrinth, so they do not narrow this search. Press Install on the row titled Dawn of Berk by Kesselot. Check the title and author, because the same search lists other packs from nearby names. A window titled "Install Dawn of Berk?" opens. Leave Take a backup first ticked, which is the default, because your current world is replaced by the pack's. If the window has Keep my world, settings and player lists, leave it unticked for the pack's own fresh world. If it has a version list, leave it on "Newest that fits your server". The rest is in Install a CurseForge modpack.

The pack ships no Forge files of its own, so the install reads variables.txt and sets Forge up itself. The install log ends with Pack installed, and the server starts on Forge 47.4.20 and Minecraft 1.20.1.

Dawn of Berk first start

If you did not tick Start the server when it's ready, press Start on the Console tab and accept the EULA when the panel asks. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail with a copy button, and Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Dawn of Berk common problems

Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server and replaces its files. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
