Enigmatica 6 Minecraft server setup

Enigmatica 6 has no usable CurseForge Minecraft server pack, so download the client file and install it with the Modpacks tab's Install your own pack card.

Updated 6 min read

Enigmatica 6 (E6) is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. Its CurseForge page lists custom world generation, many new dungeons and structures, quests, and tech and magic mods such as Mekanism, Refined Storage, Create, Botania and Ars Nouveau. This guide installs it from the pack's client file, because the server download on CurseForge does not contain the mods.

Checked against Enigmatica 6 1.12.0 on Forge 36.2.39 and Minecraft 1.16.5, October 2026.

Why this pack installs from the client file

When a CurseForge pack lists a server pack, the Modpacks tab installs that. Enigmatica 6 publishes a server download of about 5 KB instead. It holds a start script and a server-setup-config.yaml for the ServerStarter launcher, which downloads the pack itself the first time it runs. The panel does not run ServerStarter, so installing E6 from the CurseForge search would give you a Forge server without the pack's mods.

The client file, Enigmatica6-1.12.0.zip, is different. It is a list of the pack's mods plus its configs and scripts. The panel can read that list, download each mod and add the configs, the same way it handles other CurseForge packs that have no server pack.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge 36.2.39. The panel reads both from the client file's mod list and installs that Forge build. Java needs one step from you: the panel normally picks it from the Minecraft version, but an uploaded pack does not hand it a version. Switch the server to Forge 1.16.5 first, as the next section shows. The pack's own server setup file says it was tested on Java 8 and 11.
  • Memory. The pack's CurseForge page says to allocate at least 4 GB, and the Enigmatica wiki recommends at least 4 GB for 5 to 7 players and says servers usually need 4 to 8 GB. Your plan sets the RAM, so see how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans before you install.
  • A file on your computer. Download Enigmatica6-1.12.0.zip, about 21 MB, from the Files tab of the Enigmatica 6 page on CurseForge. Pick the main file, not the one named Server.
  • The same pack version for players. This guide installs Enigmatica 6 1.12.0, the newest version on the CurseForge page. Players should run that version.

Switch the server to Forge 1.16.5 first

  1. Open your server and choose JAR Manager under More in the left rail.
  2. Under Server software, pick Forge. Under Minecraft version, pick 1.16.5.
  3. Press Apply change. Leave Take a backup first ticked and hold Confirm & reinstall until it fills. Wait for the install to finish.

For Minecraft 1.16.5 the panel sets the server to Java 8, and the pack install that follows keeps that setting.

Install the pack

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail. If there is no Install your own pack card, that option is not switched on for your account yet.
  2. In the Install your own pack card, drop Enigmatica6-1.12.0.zip onto the box that says Drop a .mrpack or a server-pack .zip. Nothing installs until you press the install button.
  3. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Keep my world, settings and player lists only if you want to keep the world you have now. Otherwise the pack's world replaces it.
  4. Press Install and reinstall, then hold the confirm button in the window that opens.
  5. Open the Console and watch the install. When this guide was checked, it printed Downloading the pack's 358 mods, then 358 mods added (3 of them from Modrinth), then 22 client-only mod(s) turned off (they run on players' computers; the Mods tab can turn them back on).

When it finishes, the panel has downloaded each mod from CurseForge, or from Modrinth when CurseForge does not hand the file out. Then it turns off the mods Modrinth marks as client only, and other mods it knows only run on players' computers, by adding .disabled to their file names, unless a mod that stays on needs them. Mods > Installed lists them with a Disabled badge. When this guide was checked, four files in the list had no download link in CurseForge's API. Two of them, Masonry and Emendatus Enigmatica, are on Modrinth, so the panel fetches them from there. The third, More Overlays Updated, is a client-only light level and chunk border overlay. The panel fetches it from Modrinth too, and the same check turns it off, because Modrinth marks it as unsupported on servers, unless a mod that stays on needs it. The fourth, Spawner Bug Fix, only allows downloads from CurseForge's own site, so the Modpacks tab lists it for you to download and upload. Modpack mods to download from CurseForge covers that step.

The pack team's skip list

The small server download holds the pack team's own server setup, server-setup-config.yaml. It lists seven projects to skip on a server, mostly client-only mods: Ding, More Overlays Updated, Neat, Toast Control, PackMenu, OAuth and PonderJS. The install turns off More Overlays Updated, Neat and OAuth, which end in .disabled. The other four, Ding, PackMenu, Toast Control and PonderJS, stay on. You can leave them: when this guide was checked, the server started with all four in place. Ding writes a warning that it is a client only mod, and PackMenu switches itself off on a dedicated server.

First start

Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. On the test server that took about 34 seconds.

Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run Enigmatica 6 1.12.0, the version this guide installed, and compare their mod list with the server's mods folder.
  • The server has no mods after the install. It was installed from the small server download instead of the client file. Install again from the Install your own pack card with the main file.
  • The server lags or runs out of memory. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail, and move to a bigger plan if the RAM card stays full. Why is my server lagging has more.
  • The install stops while downloading or unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small, or the network failed. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
  • A mod fails to load. Find and read a crash report shows how to name it. The pack team takes bug reports on the Enigmatica 6 GitHub page.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
