Life in the Village modpack Minecraft server

Install the Life in the village Forge 1.12.2 pack from the Modpacks tab with CurseForge's Minecraft server files and leave its OTG world type alone.

Updated 3 min read

Life in the village is the original pack in dreams01's series, a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. The CurseForge page describes a "Vanilla+" pack built around the Millenaire and MineColonies town mods, with low-tech machines, a deep food system and different terrain generation. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files from CurseForge.

Checked against Life in the village 1.25 (the CurseForge file dated 27 May 2024) and its server pack, on Forge 14.23.5.2847 and Minecraft 1.12.2, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. The server pack carries forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2847-universal.jar and the Minecraft 1.12.2 server jar. The panel switches Java for you, which is Java 8 for this version.
  • Memory. The CurseForge page recommends a minimum of 4 GB allocated, and the server pack's own LaunchServer.sh sets a 4 GB heap. The panel does not read that script. It sizes the heap from your plan's RAM at every start. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
  • Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 306 MB and unpacks to about 416 MB. Both sit on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so allow about 725 MB free. The download is deleted afterwards, and your world grows on top. The Disk Analyser tab shows what is using space.
  • The same pack version for players. This guide installs 1.25. Players should run that version from the CurseForge app.

Install the server files

Choose the CurseForge chip in Modpacks, search for Life in the village and press Install on Life in the village, the one with no number after its name. Life in the village 2, 3, 4 and LITE are separate packs in the same results. The window names Forge and Minecraft 1.12.2. For the version list, the world and backup options and the EULA tick, see Install a CurseForge modpack.

The server pack's files sit inside one folder in the download, and the install moves them to the server's root.

First start

The server pack ships no world. The first start generates one in a folder called Biome Bundle, which is the pack's level-name.

Leave the world type alone

The pack's server.properties sets level-type=OTG, and the server pack carries the OpenTerrainGenerator and Biome Bundle mods. The pack's own readme says not to change it. In the Config Editor that setting is World type, and the World folder setting is the level-name. Leave both as they are. The Config Editor only writes the settings you changed, so saving other settings keeps them.

The pack's other settings are max-players=20, shown as Player slots under Players, and view-distance=7, shown as View distance (chunks) under Performance.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run Life in the village 1.25 on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
