Fear Nightfall modpack Minecraft server

Install the Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos horror modpack on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, with voice chat notes.

Updated 3 min read

Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos is a horror modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its CurseForge page describes it as made for co-op, difficult and immersive, with a campaign and a lot of custom content. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files.

Checked against Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 (CurseForge file dated 13 September 2025) on Forge 47.4.8 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.8. The server files name that Forge build in their variables.txt. Java 17 runs 1.20.1, and the panel picks it.
  • Memory. The pack's page gives no RAM figure, and variables.txt sets a 4 GB heap. Your plan decides the actual RAM, so how much RAM a Minecraft server needs is worth a read.
  • Disk space. The server files download at about 764 MB and unpack to about 804 MB, and the install needs room for both.
  • Players. They should install Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 from the CurseForge app. The page also links guides for playing in VR and setting up voice chat.

Install the server

In Modpacks, press the CurseForge chip and search for Fear Nightfall. Press Install on Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos, and check the row says it is by LunaPixelStudios, because other packs have similar names. The window names the loader and Minecraft version it will use, and it should read Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. The version list, the backup, the EULA and the hold-to-install button work as in Install a CurseForge modpack.

The server files hold the mods and configs but no Forge. When the panel finds no launcher in the files, it reads variables.txt and installs the loader named there, so it sets up Forge 47.4.8.

First start

The pack's server.properties sets allow-flight=true and enable-command-block=true. The Config Editor shows them as Allow flight and Command blocks under Gameplay.

Voice chat

The pack includes Simple Voice Chat 2.6.3. Its config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties sets audio to port=24454, a separate port from the game. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.

If your plan has no extra port, the same file offers port=-1, which makes voice chat share the Minecraft port. The file strongly recommends against it: UDP on that port is also used for the server query by default, and sharing it may crash the server.

Common problems

  • A player is kicked at the join screen. Their game must be Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. If it is, compare their mod list with the server's mods folder.
  • A crash at boot. If it still crashes, the crash report names the mod: find and read a crash report.
