TShock is the admin layer on a standard Terraria server: accounts, groups, bans and hundreds of commands. Your panel's Players tab handles the everyday jobs. This guide covers those, then the TShock commands for everything else.
These steps are for a server running TShock, which is the default. A tModLoader server has no accounts or groups: its Players tab only kicks and bans.
Claim your server
A new TShock server has no owner. Until it does, nobody can run admin commands.
- Start the server and wait for
Your server is online - players can join now.in the Console. - Open the Players tab. The Claim your server card asks for two things.
- Type your in-game Character name exactly, and a Password for your TShock account (4 to 64 characters).
- Press Make me the owner.
- Join the server, then type
/login yourpasswordin chat.
You are now in TShock's owner group, the highest of its groups. Log in like this each time you join: your server never logs anyone in automatically, so nobody can borrow your name to get your rights.
Make someone an admin
- Have them join the server and make an account with
/register theirpasswordin chat. - In the Players tab, find them under Online and press Make admin.
That puts their account in TShock's admin group. Press Admin on their row to take it away again, which moves them back to default. The panel won't change an owner's group, so your own account can't be demoted by accident.
Kick and ban
Under Online, each player's row has:
- Kick (the door icon): puts them off the server. They can rejoin. Confirm with Kick player.
- Ban: puts them off and refuses them from then on. Add a Reason they see (optional) and confirm with Ban player.
The ban covers their character name, their account, their device and their IP address, so a new name alone doesn't get them back in.
The Bans tab lists every ban with an Unban button. To ban someone who isn't on right now, type their name in Ban someone who isn't on, by character name and press Ban.
The server has to be running for all of this, because the panel sends it to TShock's console.
Only let in players you add
By default anyone with the address (and the join password, if you set one) can play and make an account with /register. To decide who plays yourself, open the Players tab, then Accounts:
- Switch Only players I add on. You need to have claimed the server first, so you can't lock yourself out.
- Under Add a player: character name, type their character name and Their password, then press Add player.
- Give each player their password. They type it at the connect screen.
With it on, a stranger can still join and chat, but can't build, fight or use items, and can't make their own account. Delete account removes a player's login: their character stays on their own PC.
Groups and permissions
Every TShock account is in one group, and the group decides which commands it can use. The groups a new server has, from least to most power:
To change them, use these commands in game chat (with a /) or in the panel's Console (without one):
Put a name with spaces in quotes. TShock's own documentation lists every permission name.
Commands you'll use most
The panel's Console takes the same commands without the slash. Use your server console and send commands explains how it works.
Frequently asked questions
A command says I don't have access
You aren't logged in, or your group doesn't have that permission. Type /login yourpassword first. If you're logged in, type accountinfo YourName in the panel's Console to see which group your account is in. (In game, /accountinfo is an admin command.)
I forgot my TShock password
Set a new one from the panel's Console with user password "YourName" newpassword.
Can a friend help run the panel, too?
Yes, and that's separate from TShock groups. Give friends access to your server panel covers the Team tab.
