Start a Quake server in Minecraft

Set up the Quakechasm beta with CommandAPI, WorldEdit and a resource pack on Minecraft Paper 1.21.11, build a map with the Mapper Toolkit and start a match.

Updated 6 min read

Quakechasm is a free Quake plugin for Paper servers. It is modeled on Quake 3 Arena and Quake Live rather than a simplified instagib minigame, with seven weapons, powerups, pickups, jumppads and three modes: Free For All, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. It is also a beta that needs a resource pack and two other plugins, so this guide lists what to set up before the first match.

Checked against Quakechasm 1.0.0-beta2 with CommandAPI 12.1.0 and WorldEdit 7.4.2 on Paper 1.21.11, October 2026. All three loaded together on our test server. Quakechasm 1.0.0-beta2 is the newest release, and Modrinth lists it for Minecraft 1.21.11 only. The README asks for Paper 1.21.11 or newer, but nothing newer is listed, so stay on 1.21.11.

What you need

  • Paper or a Paper fork. Spigot is not supported. Vanilla has no Plugins tab, so switch in JAR Manager (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader). Pick Paper and Minecraft 1.21.11, which runs on Java 21.
  • CommandAPI and WorldEdit. Quakechasm will not load without either. Modrinth lists no dependencies for beta2, so the store will not offer them with it, and you install both yourself from the store: CommandAPI as it comes, WorldEdit as the older 7.4.2.
  • A resource pack. The plugin expects one for its weapon models, HUD and sounds. The author advises assembling your own before you go live, and the sample pack the README links now leads to a takedown page instead of a pack.
  • Operator status for whoever builds the map, from the Players tab with Make operator.
Warning

The author says Quakechasm is under development and to expect bugs and stability issues. Try it on a spare server first.

Install CommandAPI from the store

  1. Open the Plugins tab, stay on the Store view and choose the Modrinth chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab.
  2. Search for CommandAPI and press Install on CommandAPI by JorelAli. The store puts CommandAPI's Paper build into your plugins folder: CommandAPI-12.1.0-Paper.jar when this guide was checked.

Install WorldEdit 7.4.2 with Versions

The store's newest WorldEdit, 7.4.6, needs Java 25, and Minecraft 1.21.11 runs on Java 21. Its Install button answers "WorldEdit 7.4.6 needs Java 25; this server runs Java 21 on Minecraft 1.21.11. Pick an older build with Versions on its row in the store." and installs nothing. Pick 7.4.2 instead:

  1. On the Plugins tab's Store view, search for WorldEdit and press Versions on its row.
  2. The window, "WorldEdit: pick a version", lists its builds newest first. Each one too new for this server is grayed out with "Needs Java 25, this server runs Java 21": 7.4.6 down to 7.4.3, betas included.
  3. Choose 7.4.2, the newest build this server can run, and press Install 7.4.2. The plugins folder then holds worldedit-bukkit-7.4.2.jar.

Install Quakechasm and check it loads

  1. Back on the Plugins tab's Store view, with the Modrinth chip chosen, search for Quakechasm and install it. The store installs 1.0.0-beta2 and nothing else.
  2. Restart the server from the Console tab, or press Start if it is stopped.
  3. Type plugins. It should list CommandAPI, Quakechasm and WorldEdit. The console names Quakechasm v1.0.0-beta1 even for the beta2 file.
  4. On the first start Quakechasm logs Map file doesn't exist, maps won't be loaded. and writes plugins/Quakechasm/config.json. The error is expected on a new install and was gone after one restart.
Note

The Installed view can offer an Update for WorldEdit to 7.4.6. The panel refuses it with "worldedit-bukkit-7.4.6.jar needs Java 25; this server runs Java 21 on Minecraft 1.21.11. Your current version was kept." and leaves 7.4.2 in place.

Add the resource pack

  1. Put your finished pack as a .zip somewhere that gives a direct download link starting with https://. The link must not redirect.
  2. Open the Config Editor tab and find the Resource pack section.
  3. Paste the link into Resource pack URL and press Check link. The panel downloads the file, fills in Pack checksum (SHA-1) and saves the link straight away. Check link does not look inside the file, and a link to a web page passes too, so join the server yourself and confirm the pack loads.
  4. To kick players who decline the pack, turn on Require the pack and press Save changes.
  5. Restart the server.

Build a map

Everything here is typed in game.

  1. Run /quake map toolkit. Your inventory fills with the Mapper Toolkit items.
  2. Build your arena. Place spawnpoints with the colored leather chestplates: right-click a block, and the armour stand faces the way the player will spawn. Place spawners and pickups the same way, and use the Stick for jumppads and the Ender Pearl for portals.
  3. Place every spawnpoint before the next step.
  4. Use WorldEdit to select the whole playable area.
  5. Run /quake map create <name> "<display_name>" <needed_players> <recommended_modes...>. The display name needs quotes, <needed_players> is a leftover option that still has to be filled in (the wiki suggests 2), and the modes are ffa, tdm and ctf. An example is /quake map create arena1 "Arena One" 2 ffa tdm.

The Blaze Rod in the toolkit selects, moves or deletes spawners, jumppads and the other Quake entities you placed. /quake map list lists maps, /quake map select <name> selects one in WorldEdit, and /quake map remove <name> deletes its map configuration.

Start a match

  • /quake match create <mode> <needPlayers> <mapName> creates a match, with an optional privacy setting of public, password or invite_only.
  • /quake match list shows matches, and /quake match join <index> joins one. With none running it answers There are no matches.
  • /quake match leave leaves, and /quake reload reloads the plugin and ends any match in progress.

If something does not work

  • Quakechasm does not load: CommandAPI or WorldEdit is missing, or is a release this server cannot run. Read the Console. UnsupportedClassVersionError on WorldEdit means a build for a newer Java: delete it in File Manager, then install 7.4.2 with Versions on WorldEdit's store row.
  • Weapon models, HUD or sounds are missing: the plugin takes these from its resource pack. Check Resource pack URL and restart.
  • Spawns are missing from a map: they must exist before you run /quake map create.
